Life/tech is a roller coaster. If this is your first it’s brutal but you will survive it. \r\n\r\n#2 We all need to realize we are more than our work. Yes pay is important and getting laid off sucks but remember the people who love you and think you are valuable and awesome and kind despite your job. Check in with the people who think you are the shit. Turn to your parents, friends and community to remind yourself you are more than what you do for money. \r\n\r\n#3 Your company may have been awesome but they are still a business and anything can happen. I have been laid off a few times due to acquisitions, recessions, hostile takeovers, you name it and rarely was it any fault of mine. Remember it’s often not any fault of yours.\r\n\r\n#4 Save for this! You may have made more money year over year and been promoted but times change and it doesn’t always last. I know not everyone can save but often that day comes and the unexpected should be expected. \r\n\r\n#5 You are allowed to enjoy your life if you aren’t working. Sure we may need to tighten the belt and money is often a huge issue but you are still allowed to live. Take walks, see friends, grab a sandwich and meet friends in a park. The money you spend for that will be worth the mental health benefits of seeing people and getting out.\r\n\r\n#6 Job hunting is not a full time job. It is a designated part of your day where you do what you can to move chess pieces forward, networking, meeting with people and the occasional application depending on how your roles are filled. I suggest you do it early in the day and get it done so you can grant yourself permission to do other things that feed you and keep you sane the rest of the day. \r\n\r\n#7 Do something you love every day. Take a walk, cook something new, get a beer or whatever makes you tick and be among people to remember that life is more than a job.\r\n\r\n#8 If you take care of yourself you will be ready for that next new gig that will come. You won’t be good at interviewing if you haven’t fed yourself and feel empty and alone. Do whatever you can to fill your cup. \r\n\r\n#9 Have a routine! When work doesn’t call you, make your own schedule. Enjoy some reading, shower early and get dressed. Always feed yourself. Walk, clean out a drawer, unsubscribe from all those pesky emails. Just get up and do something to feel productive, whatever that is for you.\r\n\r\n#10 This is not my first time and likely not my last. I have done it horribly and done it well and when done well I refreshed and when done not so well I stressed myself so much I was no good for anyone, not my partner, my friends, or an interviewer. \r\nI hope this helps a little and I know there are more stresses people face that I didn’t address, kids, H1B etc but having been through it a number of times, I wanted to add what I could. \r\n\r\nIt’s hard. Every headline is scary.\r\n\r\nFear closes your mind. It makes it so you can't see opportunity.\r\n\r\nIt makes it so you don't want to change.\r\n\r\nI have struggled with fear so many times in my life.\r\n\r\nAs a founder I struggle with fear every day.\r\n\r\nAs a parent, fear is almost daily.\r\n\r\nSome days I feel like a genius and I'm making a beautiful dent in the world and other days I feel like a failure and that I will run out of money and never amount to anything.\r\n\r\nThese feelings sometimes can be minutes apart.\r\n\r\nThe origin of fear is from our hunter gatherer days. Fear kept us alive.\r\n\r\nWhen your body is in danger, fear can help you.\r\n\r\nBut in the modern world, when there is less threats to our life, fear turns into anxiety.\r\n\r\nI see this fear in our clients and community all the time.\r\n\r\nThe job search and your career is often full of fear.\r\n\r\nIt seems that everyone else just has it easy and why won't someone just give me a fucking shot?\r\n\r\nHere's what I do when I feel fear.\r\n\r\nIt's called a fear check.\r\n\r\n1 - Is my life in mortal danger? Am I at risk of dying? No?\r\n\r\n2 - Is someone I care about in mortal danger? No?\r\n\r\n3 - Do I have an eviction or bankruptcy notice? No?\r\n\r\n4 - Is this feeling something I have to react to right this second? No?\r\n\r\n5 - Is this fear real or is this anxiety?\r\n\r\nOften the answer 1-4 for is no. And 5 is almost always yes.\r\n\r\nIt's anxiety that I let control me. Fear becomes an illusion.\r\n\r\nBut when I think about whether or not I am in real danger, I find new perspective with this fear check.\r\n\r\nI often find gratitude.\r\n\r\nI am grateful I am alive. I am grateful I am healthy.\r\n\r\nGratitude leads to hope easily.\r\n\r\nI think in this world of fear, you have to practice hope, like you practice your jump shot.\r\n\r\nEvery damn day until you can sink it in with your eyes closed.\r\n\r\nThe practice of hope is beautiful.\r\n\r\nHope is powerful.\r\n\r\nHope lets you see opportunities.\r\n\r\nHope lets you believe in yourself.\r\n\r\nHope can bring you prosperity.\r\n\r\nWhat brings you hope?\r\n\r\nPlease share it with us.","user":{"id":2,"username":"kidbombay","name":"Ketan Anjaria","avatar_url":"https://res-5.cloudinary.com/hireclub/image/upload/c_fill,f_auto,g_north,h_200,q_auto,w_200/h5zk2mzyb3e45b428l0f"}},{"id":298,"name":"Don't exclude yourself.","slug":"don-t-exclude-yourself","cover_uid":"mmvkhjiwrfgl1snwuidf","published_on":"2022-10-20T16:11:32.179Z","content":"One of the things that comes up often in coaching is people self excluding.\r\n\r\n\"Oh I'm not young enough for that.\"\r\n\r\n\"Oh I don't have those skills.\"\r\n\r\n\"That would never work for me.\"\r\n\r\nWhile I totally get that sometimes it's very easy to feel alone in your struggles, the truth is most problems are very common.\r\n\r\nI've talked to VPs at Google who have impostor syndrome and I've talked to brand new grads that feel like they can't make it. It's all the same.\r\n\r\nIt can be really a good feeling sometimes to fight the \"other\". To give a name and voice to separation.\r\n\r\nI've done it myself plenty of times. (Hello fundraising!)\r\n\r\nBut overall self-exclusion hurts more than helps.\r\n\r\nThere are definite patterns you see in hiring.
