[{"id":28,"name":"How to respond to, “What’s your greatest weakness?”","slug":"how-to-respond-to-what-s-your-greatest-weakness","cover_uid":"sifec5inmpwsd7cpgarz","published_on":"2018-04-23T21:24:52.520Z","content":"Few questions inspire more needless dread than, “What’s your greatest weakness?”\r\n\r\nFrom a hiring manager’s standpoint, it’s a useless question, bordering on mean. Defenders argue that it screens for self-awareness, but if that’s your goal, there are far better questions that can elicit genuinely thoughtful responses (I’ve shared a few below). But asking a candidate, “What’s your greatest weakness?” immediately puts him or her on the defensive and virtually guarantees a pat, premeditated response that reveals nothing other than that this person has thought about how to answer this question.\r\n\r\nSo what can we do instead?\r\n\r\n# For hiring managers\r\nStop asking this question. Cut it from your hiring manuals. Strike it from your handbooks. Consign it to the dustbin of corporate history where it belongs.\r\n\r\nIf you truly want to determine whether a candidate is self-aware, I’ve found these questions to be far more effective:\r\n\r\n* Why do you believe you’ve been able to be achieve the level of success that you have in your career so far?\r\n* What are two or three things you’re better at than most people?\r\n* Think about someone who is very influential in your life. What are two or three qualities you admire most about this person?\r\n* Tell me about a time when you really messed up. How did you handle it?\r\n* What does success mean to you? How about failure?\r\n\r\n# For job seekers\r\n So if you are asked this question in an interview (and at some point, you will be), what’s the best way to respond?\r\n\r\nHonestly, don’t. Run away instead. It’s a sign of an inexperienced interviewer who hasn’t done enough homework on you to ask thoughtful, probing questions that are actually relevant to the job you’re interviewing for. Do you really want to work for someone like that?\r\n\r\nBut let’s say you have a more generous spirit than I do, or maybe you just really need the job. Here are 3 ways to respond that will make you sound smart and allow the interviewer to save face, too.\r\n\r\n1. “You know, I’ve found that I can’t really separate the things I’m great at from the things I’m weak at, because they all feed into each other. For example, I’m the sort of person who needs time to think before I speak. This means you can always depend on me for a thoughtful response to a question, but it also means I can seem reticent in group settings. Is that a weakness? Maybe, but it’s definitely a strength, too.”\r\n2. “That’s an interesting question. I think what you’re trying to learn is whether or not I’m aware of my own limitations. Instead of giving you a generic answer, here’s a specific story about a time when I ran into my limits and how I handled it.”\r\n3. She is now out of the hospital and recovering.\r\n\r\nI feel incredibly lucky that due to the support from this community, my family and the choices I've made, I was able to leave last minute and support my family. I realize not many people are able to do that.\r\n\r\nLisa Maria managed the site and support while I was gone. Julie Krafchick managed coaching. All our coaches and moderators made sure things ran as smooth as possible and continued to plan future events.\r\n\r\nThis is a testament to how strong our community is and it's strengths lie way beyond me.\r\n\r\nI think we are seeing everywhere on the news and maybe some of you are feeling that Tech and it's growth has some negative impact. That this \"let's all create billion dollar companies!\" mindset has its negatives as well as positives.\r\n\r\nI think there are other ways to do business. I think work-life balance is extremely important. I've done my time at startups before, I've done the 80 hour grind and I was never that happy.\r\n\r\nWhile I have much privilege in being able to make this choice, I also spent many years making sure my clients and team knew my boundaries. I actually lost a job once when I prioritized one of my daughter's camping trips over work.\r\n\r\nOur industry has a long way to go, but I want HireClub to be place where people and companies realize that healthy bodies make healthy companies.\r\n\r\nI don't like to stress if HireClub is going to be the biggest thing in the world. While I want us to succeed and have a livable revenue model, I'm also not trying to get more gray hair.\r\n\r\nAnd I think that's the lesson both my mother's doctors and I would say. Stress is never worth it. Take time in your life for the things that matter. Please avoid logos and branded items (vests, caps, hoodies, etc).\r\n\r\nBring at least 3 outfits. One monochrome (black, white or grey) and two that you think you look your best.\r\n\r\nStrong or neutral colors work well. Larger patterns are ok but small tight patterns can sometimes create noise. We will have ties, and pocket squares but feel free to bring your own. This is time to get dandy. We will do a light make up touch to prevent shine. Don’t worry, even Hollywood heroes do this.\r\n\r\n#### Women\r\n\r\nHave a clean makeup base. Our make up artist will touch you up but a good clean start is helpful. On the outside, I did my best to appear confident, too, but in the inside, I was suffering terribly. I obsessed over every mistake, strived for unhealthy levels of perfection and lived in constant fear of being found out. Worse, I was deeply ashamed of these feelings, sure I was the only one who felt this way.\r\n\r\nSomewhere along the way, I learned that it wasn’t just me. Everyone, from CEOs to interns to working parents, feels like an imposter at some point in their lives. And we all believe we’re the only ones! I was blown away that something so common was causing so much unnecessary suffering and shame for so many millions of people.\r\n\r\nEnough is enough, don’t you think? Rather than treat Imposter Syndrome as a shameful secret, let’s recognize it as a nearly universal experience that’s just part of being human. Once you realize that, it’s far easier to lessen its hold.\r\n\r\nSo how does one begin to overcome Imposter Syndrome? Here are five of my favorite coping strategies:\r\n\r\n**Talk about Imposter Syndrome.**\r\nIt sounds counterintuitive, but talking about Imposter Syndrome is one of the most effective steps you can take to lessen its power. By sharing your experience with others, you will immediately realize you aren’t alone. This is a tremendous help in itself. It also helps to normalize the experience and reduce the feelings of shame and inadequacy we associate with Imposter Syndrome.\r\n\r\n**Personify the imposter’s voice.**\r\nYou know that voice you hear inside your head, the one that’s telling you all the ways you don’t measure up? That’s the imposter’s voice. If you’ve been listening to the imposter for a very long time, it might feel like you’re one and the same.\r\n\r\nBut the imposter doesn’t have to be a fundamental part of who you are. Its words are just thoughts like any other, and you are not your thoughts. To separate themselves from the imposter’s voice, many people find it helpful to give the imposter a name and a persona. This is also known as the “gremlin technique,” and you can learn more about it at http://www.tamingyourgremlin.com/.\r\n\r\n**Ask, “How can I serve?”**\r\nWhen we’re caught up listening to the imposter, we constantly feel like we don’t know what to do. It puts all the focus on us and the ways we believe we’re flawed, incompetent and not good enough, which keeps us frozen and stuck in a self-reinforcing feedback loop of “What should I do?”\r\n\r\nA far more powerful question is, “How can I serve?” When we ask how we can serve (as opposed to what we should do), we take the focus off of ourselves and put it back out into the world. Without the pressure to find a right answer, we’re actually in a better position to see how we can use our talents and skills to deal with the problems in front of us.\r\n\r\n**Adopt a beginner’s mind.**\r\nThe imposter demands we be an expert in all things. The moment we don’t know the answer to something, the imposter holds it up as proof of our inadequacy. Try adopting a beginner’s mind instead. Beginner’s mind is a simple yet profound concept in Zen Buddism, described by the blog *Zen Habits* as “dropping our expectations and preconceived ideas about something, and seeing things with an open mind, fresh eyes, just like a beginner.”\r\n\r\nWhen we view the world like an expert, we’re under constant pressure to know what we’re doing. When we adopt a beginner’s mind, we’re free to learn, experiment, even admit when we don’t know the answer. This doesn’t just help us feel better; it helps us think more creatively, overcome blind spots and solve problems more effectively.\r\n\r\n**Welcome the imposter as a sign that you’re growing.**\r\nThink about the times when you hear the imposter’s voice. Probably not when you’re safely ensconced in your comfort zone. But when you’re learning a new skill or facing a new challenge? Then the imposter speaks loud and clear! That’s because--in its own counterproductive way--all the imposter really wants is to keep you safe. It wants to protect you at all costs from being shunned by the tribe because, for most of human history, our survival was literally at stake. No wonder the imposter feels so strong!\r\n\r\nIn the 21st century, though, our individual and collective success depends on our ability to step out of our comfort zones and continuously challenge ourselves and others to adopt new ways of thinking and doing. This terrifies our imposter, so it makes perfect sense that every time we make a bold move, alarm bells go ringing.\r\n\r\nIn a weird way, this means it’s actually a good sign when we feel Imposter Syndrome.
