The term is deeply unfair and needs to be retired.\r\n\r\nLong ago people would work at companies for years, with promotions and growth being a core part of the process. Mail room to exec room, was a path for some.\r\n\r\nCompanies don't reward employees like they used to. With outsourcing, downsizing and acquisitions, long term employee retention has been decimated with average employment length now 4 years.\r\n\r\nCompanies give low raises. Less than 10% a year and in most cases often not at all. Switching jobs can easily net you 20% to 30% more in salary.\r\n\r\nIn tech where startups often fail, or have horrible HR practices, it makes sense that many employees are looking at better offers.\r\n\r\nPeople don't want to leave companies, they often have to leave because companies aren't seeing their value. This goes double for women and POC who face discrimination in career growth every day.\r\n\r\nThe data and math is clear, companies do everything in their power to reduce costs and increase profit and are rewarded for it.\r\n\r\nFor these reasons and many more, switching jobs is often the right thing for the vast majority of workers.\r\n\r\nPeople who want to make more money or experience more growth should be called job optimizers. The rich are getting richer, income inequality is higher than it’s ever been and since the pandemic started it’s been the worst unemployment in the history of the US.\r\n\r\nCompanies are making higher profits than ever and the average worker hasn’t seen pay rise in any comparable way. Many people are truly hurting in ways we haven’t seen before. Poverty is endemic.\r\n\r\nBecause I talk to people who have lost jobs every day, I am deeply aware of the struggles they face. I hear every single day from people who are having a hard time and often face real issues like loss of income, loss of  housing and loss of health.\r\n\r\nI am pro-union, pro wealth tax, anti-billionaire and pro-worker. I have been a union steward and part of the fight for $15 minimum wage movement.\r\nWe have to fight these battles every single day to make sure all workers are paid fairly and higher. Being aware of these issues is deeply important and I support everyone trying to make ends meet.\r\n\r\nI always support people doing what they need to support themselves. Sometimes that means doing work you don’t love or getting paid less than you’d like right now.\r\n\r\nBut the whole notion of a worker’s movement is predicated on a hope for a better future. We can’t strive for a better future if we don’t talk about it. We can’t understand what rights we have (including the right to say no singularly and collectively) if we don’t discuss these things openly.\r\n\r\nI understand many of you are hurting. That pains me deeply. But when community members are sharing resources and perspectives that can provide light, I think it’s much more helpful to listen and find growth. If we attack the very people who are on our side, we are just dividing ourselves while the rich grow richer.\r\n\r\nThere can definitely be toxic positivity. Not being aware or talking about the issues people face or steamrolling over real issues is something to be concerned. But if you are coming on HireClub to attack the very same folks who are likely in similar boats as you, you aren’t helping anyone.\r\n\r\nI know it feels good to vent. It feels good to call out privileges. Those are important feelings as well. But as I hope we all know, there’s lots of other feelings we can talk about.\r\n\r\nWhat I want to share with you all is that regardless of how deeply terrible and unfair the economy is, what choice do we have to up but to rise up?\r\n\r\nOne politically and at the poles. We should fight for the change we want to see. We should fight for equal and higher pay. We should fight for leaders who believe in democracy and fairness and equity.\r\n\r\nTwo we should fight negativity and self-destruction. If we embrace a pessimistic mindset, the rich have won. If we attack each other’s single cookie while the rich steal the whole damn table, we have lost.\r\n\r\nThree, I also believe in intersectionality. Frankly the most toxic comments we see are from men. Women in our community raise each other up and provide support and confidence. More than I’d like to see, men continue to berate others and insert their beliefs in harsh ways.\r\n\r\nFirst all of men, we need to be ok to talk about our pain. We are not socialized to cry or talk about hurt. Much of men’s negative behavior comes from toxic masculinity and bottled up pain. It’s more than welcome to discuss your pain or hurt or needs.\r\n\r\nSecond of all men, hold on your comments if you have nothing helpful to add. Honestly it’s tiring to get reports from the women in our community that yet another man is attacking a women’s viewpoint. You think you are being smart or helpful but honestly you are either mansplaining at best and being hurtful and rude and condescending at worst. It’s not really that hard to be kind on the internet. You think you are fighting the struggles you believe in and you might be, but you are likely also attacking a woman on the internet on your way. Think about how you are writing, is it coming off kind and helpful or just another dude inserting himself on the internet? \r\n\r\nWhile it doesn’t happen often in HireClub, I’ve noticed it happening more than I’d like lately. They might not have the budget. \r\n2. They use salary levels as a formula. \r\n3. While they want to hire you, something could have happened where they aren’t 200% on you. That could be a slightly off interview or a test you did that wasn’t 100. They want you but aren’t sure of your future growth. \r\n4. They don’t want to pay more. \r\n \r\nAll of these reasons are valid. A hire is a transactional purchase. People have freedom to decide if they want to purchase or not. \r\n\r\n### Here’s what a good company will do this in case:\r\n\r\nHi we’re sorry we are not able to to increase the offer. We still want you to join, will you accept?\r\n\r\n### Here’s what a horrible, no good company will do:\r\n\r\nSorry we are not interested in hiring you. \r\n\r\nIf a company rescinds an offer because you negotiated, you have dodged a BULLET!\r\n\r\nAn ethical company will not rescind an offer because you negotiated. You don’t want to work at any company that does this. Guaranteed they will treat you badly later. \r\n\r\nIt sucks that it happened but not all offers are good offers. It’s in your best interest to name and shame these companies. And run away from a company that rescinds offers because you negotiated. I'm no stranger to fear or anxiety. I know it's hard out there sometimes.\r\nBut here's some things I have learned from 2020.\r\n\r\n1 - No matter what, YOU have to be your biggest fan. No one else is going to do it.\r\nWhether it's impostor syndrome or lack of self-confidence, how you feel about yourself decides so much about your outlook. Take all the time in the world you need for self care. Say more nice things about yourself. Brag. Be proud. You are freaking amazing.\r\n\r\n2 - You are likely wrong on some things. In my case, many things lol. The ability to be humble and take feedback is crucial for success. Do not expect to repeat the same behaviors and get different results. You have to change with the times. 2020 has shown us massive change is going to happen whether you are ready for it or not. Change with the waves.\r\n\r\n3 - Approach any new initiative, whether your job search or career growth with a \"What amazing things are possible?\" attitude. I spent much of 2020 in a funk and my work and my company suffered. When I realized I had scarcity mindset and how much it was holding me back, I saw how negative my thoughts were. Even if bad things happened, your resilience and faith will do more for you than what job you have or how much money you make.\r\n\r\n4 - Get some help. Nobody can survive on their own. It takes a village to survive 2020 or 2021. I have multiple advisors, coaches, therapists, friends, employees that I rely on for help. I am not ashamed to admit that I need help all the time. Needing help is the basis of jobs. Companies need help via employees to get stuff done. You need help via coaches or friends or therapy to grow. If you have the attitude you don't need anyone, no one will need you.\r\n\r\n5 - Spend money on things that return you money or time. Don't spend money on things for status. You don't need that fancy new latest phone or laptop but investing in a coach or a therapy or exercise has an ROI miles ahead of other things. Treating yourself to a nice meal is wonderful if you are tired. #treatyoself\r\n\r\n6 - If something bad happens, don't make the assumption that you are bad. Your resume could have been skipped because they were just busy. You could have not gotten that job because they found someone else but none of those things should be reflected in your self worth. But if you take everything as an attack, you'll always be on guard. That's so damn tiring. I know because I do that and I'm exhausted. Don't make the same mistake I do and view the world as out to get you. \r\n\r\n7 - Don't ask people for free things. You want to be paid and be paid well. So does everyone else. If you don't value others, they won't value you. In America we don't often have a strong social safety net but paying and supporting your friends and their businesses and them supporting you is a great way to have a safety net. We can grow together or we can squabble for pennies. Pay it forward. \r\n\r\n8 - Boundaries are your friends. Know your limits and communicate them. You are strongest when you don't over extend yourself. Rest is built into success. Don't accept people or places that make you feel less. Separate yourself from abuse and negativity.\r\n\r\n9 - Laugh. All the time. I watch 30 minutes to an hour of comedy almost every day. I try to find joy everywhere I can and try not to take myself seriously. For those of us that survived 2020, we are incredibly lucky and being able to find joy in the craziness is how you will build resilience and growth. #wtf2020\r\n\r\n10 - Help others when you can. This is how HireClub started. I truly believe in this. Whether it's coaching or just being there for someone, helping others gives you perspective on how lucky you are. Even if you think you have it bad, trust me there are others that have it worse.
