About the role and who will make a great fit
We are looking for a bright and compassionate Director of Technology to be a leader and advocate for our diverse technology department (composed of Engineering, Operations, Quality Assurance, and Customer Support teams). You are someone who feels great about leading with open communication, transparency, a sense of humor, and respect. You’ll take on leadership responsibilities while also encouraging technological and personal growth in other team members.
As the director of the team, you will develop and manage our organization’s commitment to high-performance, scalable technology using industry best practices. Within the organization, the director of technology has traditionally collaborated closely with other departments. You’ll have the ability to work alongside all teams to provide innovative solutions to real problems in realms ranging from data architecture to product development. You will interact often with the executive team and report directly to the CEO (our former CTO).
Balancing technology and business needs, you’ll create and maintain the technology roadmap and milestones by prioritizing and allocating resources against an array of technologies and business projects. As part of such oversight, you’ll also bring major new projects and initiatives all the way from conception to market as high-quality, maintainable features. Examples of current projects in the works or on the horizon include: improving data storage & processing, transitioning from self-hosting to scalable cloud hosting and deployment, and rewriting our publishing system.

- Significant hands-on software development experience
- Project management experience
- Experience managing and motivating small, agile development teams
- Demonstrated ability to envision web-based services that meet consumer needs or solve business problems
- Experience building high-availability service-oriented/microservice infrastructure
- In-depth knowledge of full-stack JavaScript development
- Broad knowledge of Web technologies such as Node.js, Express, MongoDB, MySQL, Git, and web analytics such as Google Analytics and Optimizely
- Experience with UNIX-like operating systems such as Debian-based Linux
- Exposure to business theory, project management methodologies, budgeting, and administrative operations
- Familiarity with agile project management methodologies and forecasting project costs based on point estimation
- Ability to articulate ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences
