Senior Principal Engineer Your Key Responsibilities Include:
The position includes two, key roles: (i) senior technical contributor for the design and development of optical line system products and (ii) site lead for this function.
In the technical contributing role you will work close with our optical system design team to translate system requirements into product and then component specifications. You than are responsible for optical design, calibration, optical DVT and debug of said products, such as EDF amplifiers, Raman amplifiers, FOADMs, ROADMs, OPM, OCM, optical switches, OTDR, spectrum equalizers and the like.
As the site lead you provide onsite supervision to complement engineering management coming from our Sunnyvale, CA office. You will be a mentor to the more junior engineers in Ottawa and help them understand and satisfy their roles and work objectives as handed to them by their managers. The local skills will include optical, FW, HW and may extend to mechanical, thermal and SW diagnostics. Most of these objectives will be affected through your role as a “Lead Engineering Manager” for projects assigned to you. LEM is an assignment, not an evergreen role. For the life of the project you are the first layer for cross-discipline coordination between the various skills comprising a product development team, ensuring high quality design decisions, making necessary trade-offs, assigning tiger teams to difficult problems and so on. You can see that this is similar to the more traditional “lead engineer” role with possibly a bit more control and accountability.
Education & Experience:
• At least 10 years of engineering experience with PhD in appropriate discipline • At least 15 years of experience with MS • At least 7 years of experience in a design and development function for optical line system products • Prefer years of experience integrating various and adjacent disciplines for product development, as calibration automation, test automation, electrical, FPGA, FW, SW
Skill Requirements:
• Master’s degree or higher in Optical Engineering, Optics, Physics or Electrical Engineering o Prefer PhD • Optical systems engineering • Optical communications product design and development • Write engineering and design specifications • Write test plans, review test results and judge design margins to support compliance to specifications over life of product • Accountable leadership • Highly organized with strong attention to details • Superb communication: verbal and written
